• If unresponsive and not breathing normally, call emergency services and get an AED
• For an adult, push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100–120 compressions per minute
• Use the AED as soon as available and follow its spoken instructions
• Child and infant CPR differs—follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions

🧠 Stroke — F.A.S.T.

• Face drooping
• Arm weakness
• Speech difficulty
• Time — call your island’s emergency service immediately

🌊 Drowning

• Call emergency services and remove the person from the water only if safe to do so
• If not breathing normally, begin CPR and use an AED as soon as available
• Use the recovery position only if the person is unconscious but breathing normally
• Do not attempt to force water out or perform a blind finger sweep

😮 Choking

• If the person cannot cough, speak or breathe, call emergency services
• Adult/child: alternate 5 back blows with 5 abdominal thrusts until relieved
• Infant: alternate 5 back blows with 5 chest thrusts—never abdominal thrusts
• Use chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts during pregnancy; if unresponsive, begin CPR

🩸 Diabetes Emergency

• Signs: shaky, confused, sweating
• If conscious: give a sugary drink (not diet) or candy
• If unconscious: call your island’s emergency service — do not give anything by mouth

🫁 Breathing Problems

• Asthma (wheezing): sit upright, use inhaler if available
• Hyperventilation: reassure them and encourage slow, gentle breathing—never use a paper bag
• Severe symptoms, blue lips, chest pain or no improvement: call emergency services

🩹 Bleeding

• Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth
• Do not remove the cloth — add more on top if soaked
• For life-threatening bleeding, call emergency services; use a commercial tourniquet only if trained

🦵 Impact Injuries — R.I.C.E.

• Rest — stop activity immediately
• Ice — 15 minutes (cloth between ice and skin)
• Compression — wrap firmly, not too tight
• Elevation — raise above heart level

🔥 Burns

• Cool under running room-temperature water for 20 minutes
• No ice, no butter, no toothpaste
• Cover loosely with a clean non-fluffy cloth

😵 Fainting

• Lay them on their back
• Elevate their legs above heart level
• Loosen any tight clothing around neck or waist

☀️ Heatstroke

• Heatstroke is life-threatening: confusion, collapse, seizure or very hot skin requires an immediate emergency call
• Move to a cool area, remove outer clothing and cool rapidly with cool water, wet cloths and airflow
• Do not give anything by mouth if confused, vomiting, having a seizure or unconscious

⚡ Electric Shock

• Do NOT touch the person until the power source is turned off
• Call your island’s emergency service immediately
• Do not move them unless there is immediate danger

🪸 Sea Stings

• Jellyfish: rinse with vinegar or seawater — not fresh water
• Sea Urchin / Lionfish: soak in hot water (as hot as tolerable)
• Seek medical help if symptoms worsen

• Do NOT eat the small apple-like fruit (“death apple”)
• If ingested or after serious skin contact: call your island’s emergency service immediately
